Q: Can dental Auxilliaries refuse to work on HIV, Hep-B or Hep-C, etc., patients?
A: As per Nancy at the office of the Secretary of Enforcement (referencing DPA 125.6 (page 128), "any
licensed staff must work on such medically-comprimised patients."
The Bottom Line: if you work under a license, you must see/work on these patients.
Q: How long can one have a dental license inactive?
A: As per Tracey at the California State Dental Board, "There is currently no limit on how long a DDS,
RDA or RDH remains inactive. However, there could always be a change in the law. Remember: at the
time a license is activated, the license must be current in the required CEUs, so plan ahead.
Q: Can Auxilliaries in a dental office draw blood?
A: Anita Doudy at CDA advises auxilliaries may only do procedures listed in the description of listed duties. Because drawing blood is not in the list, the answer is no, auxilliaries may not draw blood.
