California compliance questions

Quick answers for California dentists and office managers.

Is Cal/OSHA different from federal OSHA for dental offices?
Yes. California runs its own OSHA program, and some of its rules go further than federal OSHA. For example, every California employer needs a written Injury & Illness Prevention Program, and most also need a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan under SB 553.
What CE do California dental licensees need every renewal?
Every licensee needs 2 units of Infection Control and 2 units of California Dental Practice Act each renewal, plus a current BLS course, and dentists also need 2 units on prescribing Schedule II opioids. See the renewal chart above for total units by license. You can take all three required courses online with us. Dental Ed is an approved provider with the Dental Board of California (RP3101) and AGD PACE (#310218).
What training does our team need every year?
At minimum, Bloodborne Pathogens training and Workplace Violence Prevention training each year, plus training for new hires and whenever a new hazard is introduced. CALM members get annual live training for the whole team and on-demand courses for anyone who misses it.
We just opened or remodeled an office. Where do we start?
A new space usually means updating your Exposure Control Plan, IIPP and Workplace Violence Prevention Plan. CALM memberships trained in person include a walkthrough of your office before training. Book a 15-minute call and we'll tell you what to do first.
