Colorado compliance questions

Quick answers for Colorado dentists and office managers.

Does Colorado have its own OSHA program?
No. Colorado doesn't run a state OSHA plan for private employers, so private dental offices follow federal OSHA rules, including the Bloodborne Pathogens and Hazard Communication standards.
How many CE hours do Colorado dentists and hygienists need?
30 hours every two-year license period, including 2 hours of infection control, a current BLS course, and at least 16 clinical or science-based hours. Dentists also need 1 hour of opioid and substance use prevention training unless they qualify for an exemption. See the renewal chart above.
Do Colorado dental assistants need a license or CE?
Colorado doesn't license dental assistants, so there's no renewal CE. They still need OSHA training as employees, and some duties, like taking x-rays, require specific training first.
When do Colorado dental licenses renew?
Dentist and hygienist licenses expire at the end of February in even-numbered years, so the next renewal is in early 2028. Keep your CE certificates for at least 4 years in case of an audit.
